April is Autism Awareness Month—a time to promote understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum. Today, on Autism Awareness Day, Sheriff Eddie Langlinais reminds our community that awareness makes a difference. With patience, compassion, and education, we can better serve and support Vermilion Parish residents with autism and their families. As part of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Autism Awareness Initiative, residents can always pick up resident and passenger stickers at all VPSO locations or through their local police department. Together, we can build a safer, more inclusive community.

The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office recently had an increase in calls related to vehicle thefts and items missing from vehicles. Sheriff Eddie Langlinais would like to remind residents of a few simple steps that will help protect themselves from vehicle burglaries. Please remember to: -Lock your vehicle doors at all times and remove keys from your vehicle, even when parked at home. -Remove valuables such as wallets, firearms, electronics, and cash from your vehicle. -Stay aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity you see. Many vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Taking these simple precautions can go a long way in preventing you from becoming a victim. If you see something suspicious, contact your local law enforcement agency. Contact information for the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, as well as all police departments and first responder agencies in Vermilion Parish can be found by tapping the "Contact Us" icon on the Vermilion Parish Sheriff LA app.

The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents who operate off-road vehicles, including UTVs and golf carts, to stay informed of Louisiana laws governing their use on public roads. In the past year there have been multiple UTV crash incidents in Vermilion Parish that resulted in injuries, including one fatality. With summer months approaching, Sheriff Eddie Langlinais and VPSO deputies want to educate residents on safe and lawful operations. We understand these vehicles are a part of daily life for many, whether for work, recreation, or local travel, but we encourage everyone to remain mindful of the laws when operating them on roadways. -RS 32:299: Off-road vehicles are not permitted on public roadways unless specifically authorized by local government. This statute makes it lawful for farmers to operate farm equipment as an exception. -RS 32:299.3: UTVs are generally prohibited from being operated on public streets and highways, except in limited circumstances. -RS 32:299.4: Golf carts may only be driven on roads officially designated and approved by a parish or municipality. Vermilion Parish residents should remember that off-road vehicles are not street-legal and should only be driven on public roadways where permitted by Louisiana law. VPSO deputies will continue to enforce these laws to ensure the safety of all motorists. We appreciate your cooperation and your continued support in helping us keep Vermilion Parish a safe place to live and travel. For a full explanation of the above statutes, please visit the Louisiana State Legislature at https://legis.la.gov/legis/Law.aspx?p=y&d=88237

Curious about what it takes to keep Vermilion Parish safe? The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy offers a behind-the-scenes look at every aspect of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office. Next Wednesday, April 1st, Sheriff Eddie Langlinais and Chief Deputy Blair Dore will welcome participants as we kick off Citizen’s Academy Class 2026-01. Over five weeks, participants will learn from VPSO leadership and deputies about patrol operations, training programs, K-9 units, water patrol, and the day-to-day responsibilities of deputies in the field. The academy also dives into criminal investigations, including narcotics enforcement, crime scene processing, and evidence handling. Participants will gain insight into the court system from special guest speaker Judge Jonathan Perry, then hear from VPSO deputies about civil processes and the administrative side of the Sheriff’s Office. We will then take an inside look at corrections, covering booking, inmate life, and facility operations. The program wraps up with an interactive, hands-on experience featuring a demonstration from the VPSO SWAT team, training simulations, and an experience on the firing range. The VPSO Citizen's Academy is a unique opportunity to learn, engage, and connect with local law enforcement in a meaningful way and we would love to have you. Limited seats are still available, and Vermilion Parish residents can apply by visiting VermilionSheriff.gov/citizens-academy or by downloading the Vermilion Parish Sheriff LA app. For questions or additional information, please email Public Information Officer Ashley Adams at ashleya@vermilionsheriff.gov.

A resident reported receiving a call from men claiming to be law enforcement officers saying her son could be released by a judge if she paid for an ankle monitor. The scammers asked her to choose between: • P1 GPS – $1,000 • P2 Video GPS – $2,000 • P3 Wrist GPS – $3,000 They claimed the deposit would be returned after court and gave a callback number of 813-575-7176. Sheriff Eddie Langlinais and Vermilion Parish Correctional Center Warden Sammy LaPorte want Vermilion residents to know this is a scam. Law enforcement and courts do not call family members demanding payment for ankle monitors or release conditions. They remind residents: • Never give financial or personal information over the phone. • Do not send money to unknown callers. • If someone claims a loved one can be released with GPS monitoring, hang up and call the jail directly at (337) 898-4430 to verify the information.
